How to Help Your Dark Jeans Keep Their ColorHow to Help Your Dark Jeans Keep Their Color
One of the questions I’m often asked after someone purchases a pair of dark denim jeans, or denim jacket, is how to help them stay looking rich and dark for as long as possible.
While some fading is natural over time, these two simple tips can make a noticeable difference.
1. Set the dye before wearing them
Before wearing your new dark jeans for the first time, turn them inside out and soak them in cold water with one cup of white vinegar for about 30 to 60 minutes. (No they will not smell of vinegar afterwards)
The vinegar helps the indigo dye bond more firmly to the fabric, which can reduce excess dye loss during the first few washes.
After soaking, hang them to air dry.
2. Wash them as little as possible, and always in cold water
Every wash removes a small amount of dye. Unless your jeans are actually dirty, they usually don’t need frequent washing.
When it is time:
- Turn them inside out.
- Wash in cold water.
- Use a gentle detergent designed for dark colors if possible.
- Skip the dryer and hang them to dry.
Your jeans will thank you by keeping their deep color much longer.
A beautiful pair of dark denim is one of the hardest-working pieces in a wardrobe. With a little care, they’ll continue looking polished and flattering for many seasons.
Stylishly yours,
Charlotte
