I was filming a little fashion video recently when a thought struck me.
Over the years, I’ve worked with thousands of women and men. Different ages. Different careers. Different personalities.
Yet they all seem to have one thing in common.
When they put on the right outfit, something changes. Their posture shifts. Their smile appears almost instantly. They stand a little taller. They don’t just like what they’re wearing. They like what they see.
That made me wonder: Why do we spend so much of our lives wearing clothes that make us feel… okay?
Not terrible. Not wonderful. Just… fine.
It’s fascinating because we rarely accept “fine” in other areas of life. Yet every morning many of us reach for clothes that don’t quite fit, don’t quite flatter us, or no longer reflect who we are.
Some have simply become familiar. Others were expensive, so we feel guilty letting them go. Some fit an earlier version of ourselves. And some have quietly lowered the standard of how we expect to feel every day.
I don’t believe this is really about clothing. I think it’s about permission.
Somewhere along the way, many of us begin believing that feeling amazing should be reserved for special occasions.
The important meeting. The wedding. The holiday. The night out.
Meanwhile, ordinary Tuesday gets whatever is left.
But here’s the interesting thing.
Most of life happens on ordinary Tuesdays. Those everyday moments are where confidence is built. They’re where first impressions are made. They’re where we catch our reflection in a shop window, smile, and carry ourselves a little differently without even realizing it.
As a stylist, people often assume I’m encouraging them to buy more. In reality, I’m usually encouraging the opposite.
You don’t need a closet bursting with clothes. You need a handful of pieces that make you think, I can’t wait to wear this today. Those pieces earn their place. They become the ones you instinctively reach for because they consistently make you feel like yourself.
I’ve never been particularly fond of the phrase, “You deserve it.” But I do believe we owe ourselves something. We owe ourselves the same care and consideration we so willingly give everyone else. And yes, we deserve to wear clothes every day that make us feel good and even better when we look in the mirror.
If a small change can help you feel more confident, more authentic, or simply more like yourself, why wouldn’t you make it?
Life is too short to spend it feeling “good enough.” To wear clothes you don’t love.
Your clothes don’t change who you are. But they sure can make you feel great, and remind you of who you are.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need before we walk out the door.
Stylishly yours,
Charlotte
